Located in Ottawa, Ontario, Gallery 101 is a non-profit artist-run centre with charitable status dedicated to the professional presentation and circulation of visual and media arts. Each year, we present a stimulating array of solo and group exhibitions of Canadian and international contemporary artists working in all mediums. We also offer services and professional development opportunities to artists, curators, writers and critics. Commitment to artists and their work is our first priority.
As an artist-run-centre, G101 champions artists' rights and advocates for fair payment of arists in all our programming and partnerships. We are a not-for-profit and registered charitable organization, able to secure funding through all levels of government and various partnerships to produce exhibitions and events and pay CARFAC recommended artist fees.
In 1979, a small group of energetic Ottawa artists pooled their resources to establish a new non-profit gallery in which they would have control over the production and presentation of their own work. Officially incorporated as the Artists’ Centre d’Artistes, it was located at 101, Fourth Avenue. During the 1980s, Gallery 101 also organized performances, poetry readings, and music events alongside its regular exhibition programming. Media arts - including sound art, video, and experimental cinema - became an important part of our programming in the 1990s.
- diversity in our staff, board of directors, partnerships, and programming
- freedom of expression for voices sometimes silenced, marginalized, or hidden
- advocating for fair payment of artists in all our programming and partnerships - we pay all exhibiting artists per CARFAC recommendations
- excellence in professional contemporary art practices
Gallery 101 honours and respects the original people of the territory we currently occupy: unceded and unsurrendered Anishnaabe-Aki who have been living and working on this land since time immemorial.
Gallery 101 gratefully acknowledges the support of the City of Ottawa, the Ontario Arts Council (an agency of the government of Ontario), and the Canada Council for the Arts. Gallery 101 thanks the Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival, our members, volunteers, partners, and all our relations.
