Artist Talk with Annie Dunning at Gallery 101

    Saturday, November 18th, 2017 from 1-3pm

Annie Dunning will share stories with images and sound gathered as a participating artist at City Sonic (2017). City Sonic is an annual festival dedicated to showcasing the diversity of sound art in an urban setting. This September was the 15th year of the festival and it was held in Charleroi, Belgium. Annie Dunning (Guelph, ON) was one of about 80 participating artists from Belgium and abroad. She traveled to Charleroi to attend some of the festival events, and on November 18, at 1:00PM she will be at Gallery 101 to tell us more about the festival and her experiences.

Gallery 101 Members will remember Dunning’s solo exhibition Sapsucker Sounds from 2015, an installation of objects and interactive sound sculptures that offered an opportunity to experience sound generated by the conflation of human and woodpecker culture. The work began with a found log, filled with holes made by a Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker. Each sculpture is a different attempt to interpret the marks the bird has “recorded”. Sapsuckers, like other woodpeckers, use their hammering to delineate their territorial range as well as find food. In addition to using hollow trees, they have been known to hammer on metal chimney flashing and road signs, taking advantage of the amplification these introduced items offer.

Gallery 101 gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the City of Ottawa, the Ontario Arts Council (an agency of the government of Ontario), and the Canada Council for the Arts. Gallery 101 thanks the Asinabka Film & Media Arts Festival, our members, volunteers, partners, and all our relations.
