About Gallery 101

Gallery 101 is an independent guide to art galleries and exhibition spaces. It is not affiliated with Gallery 101 / Galerie 101, the artist-run centre in Ottawa, whose own website is g101.ca.

What the site does

Search engines and review sites can tell you a gallery exists. They rarely tell you what kind of gallery it is, whether it is free, what it shows, or whether it takes submissions from artists. Gallery 101 lists every gallery and exhibition space we can find in a city, sorts them by type (public, artist-run, university, municipal, co-op, non-profit and commercial), and sets out the facts that matter before you go.

For artists, the guides explain how the gallery system works: the kinds of gallery, how to approach one, how to write about your work, and what galleries in Canada pay artists.

Where the facts come from

Listings start from open data: OpenStreetMap, Wikidata, the artist-run centre associations and city listings. We then check each fact against the gallery's own website and show when it was last checked. We do not copy gallery descriptions, publish reviews or ratings, or use photographs we do not have the rights to.

Independence

No gallery pays to be listed, and no gallery listed here runs this site. A listing is not an endorsement. If you run a gallery and something on your page is wrong, tell us and we will fix it.

The name

“101” is the introductory course: the place to start. Visitors following old links to Gallery 101 / Galerie 101 will find the centre's own listing here, with a link to its website.
